Nano Engineers at University of California San Diego have created a new type of Battery which uses both a Solid State Electrolyte and an All-Silicon Anode. They did the research in collaboration with researchers at the LG Energy Solution.
The new Battery technology is described in the 24th September issue of the Journal of Science according to a report published by TechXplore. Silicon Anodes have great Energy Density about 10 times greater than the Graphite Anodes used in the commercial batteries.
Darren H.S. Tan, the lead author of the paper said as follows. “With this battery configuration, we are opening a new territory for solid-state batteries using alloy anodes such as silicon”.
The research team demonstrated a laboratory scale full cell delivering 500 charge and discharge cycles. It has 80% capacity retention at room temperature and has a promising future for the Silicon Anode and Solid State batteries.
