Nuclear Fusion is a reaction releasing large amount of Energy, when two or more Atomic Nuclei are combined to form one or more different Atomic Nuclei and Subatomic particles (Neutrons and Protons). A key milestone achievement in Nuclear Fusion Energy has been reported by Physicists at the National Ignition Facility at Lawrance Livermore National Laboratory. On December 5, 2022, a team of physicists at NIF conducted the first controlled fusion experiment in history to reach energy breakeven.
An article published by Sci News on their website describes about this great achievement. In order to create Fusion Ignition, NIF’s Laser Energy is converted into X-rays inside a Hohlraum, compressing a fuel capsule until it implodes. It creates a high temperature, high pressure Plasma. A Hohlraum is a cavity whose walls are in radiative equilibrium with the radiant energy, within the cavity – basically a hollow space.
During a Nuclear Fusion process, the difference in mass between the reactants and the products get manifested as either release or absorption of energy. During Nuclear Fusion, large amounts of energy are released. Our Sun generates its energy by Nuclear Fusion of Hydrogen Nuclei into Helium where Sun fuses 500 million metric tons of Hydrogen each second in its core.
