Argentina lifts the World Cup Foot Ball 2022 trophy, ending their 36-year long wait after fighting off with the defending champion France on the 18th December 2022. Yes, in an exciting and highly energetic match between the defending champion France, Argentina won the World Cup 2022, playing their match in the Lusail Stadium in Qatar. Argentina lost their very first match in this season, playing with Saudi Arabia in the Group Stage on 22nd November. But they raised to the occasion and won the finals on 18th December 2022. Croatia, won the third-place play-off beating Morocco (2-1) on the 17th December play. This is the third World Cup victory for Argentina – the previous ones being 1978 and 1986 World Cup.
Highlights of the Match
The first half of the match was dominated by Argentina with 2 goals and in the second half the French team got into full action and returned 2 goals levelling the score. Lionel Messi scored the first goal at the 23rd minute through a Penalty and the second one was by Angel Di Maria in the 36th minute. Kylian Mbappe of France returned the goals in the 80th and the 118th minutes through two Penalties. The extra time saw one goal each from each side again levelling the score. Then came the Penalty Shootout in which Argentina scored 4 and France could only make 2 of the four attempted. This made Argentina win and claim the World Cup 2022. In the number of Goals scored, Kylian Mbappe is at the first position with 8 goals, Lionel Messi with 7 and Julian Alvarez (Argentina) and Olivier Giroud (France) with 4 each overall.
The Finishing
It was indeed a nail-biting finish and a superb victory for the Argentina team. Throughout the final, we could see the Argentina fans cheering their team in support. This was the fourth final for France since 1998 and remained unbeaten in their last 10 matches on big stage against South American sides. Lionel Messi of Argentina won the Golden Ball for the Best Player at this year’s World Cup, Kylian Mbappe of France won the Golden Boot for the tournament’s top scorer with Eight Goals. He became the second man to score three times in a World Cup final after England’s Geoff Hurst in 1996. Skipper Lionel Messi is one short of Kylian Mbappe. Argentina’s Emilano Martinez took the Golden Glove for the World Cup’s best Goal Keeper and Enzo Fernandez who is just 21 was named as the Best Young Player of the tournament.
The 2026 incarnation of the FIFA World Cup will be the first one to be staged jointly by three countries in the United States, Canada and Mexico. This could become a start of hosting the World Cup matches in multiple countries.
