Do you know that there is (only one) a Temple where the Idol is Lord Ganesha with his Human Head?. Yes, though we have uncountable number of temples having Ganesha with the head of an elephant, there is only one temple in the world with a Human head. We celebrated the Ganesha Chathurthy yesterday but how many of us know about this fact? Sincerely, I was ignorant of this until today morning.
The Adi Vinayakar Temple located in the Tiruvarur district of Tamil Nadu is the only temple in the world where the diety Lord Ganesha is having the human head. It is about 4 hours drive South East of Trichy (Thiruchirappalli) towards Poompuhar. People come here from many places to worship this unique form of Ganesha.
It is believed that Lord Rama once worshiped the souls of his ancestors in the Adi Vinayakar temple. For this reason, people started worshipping in this temple for the peace of their ancestors. This temple is also known as Tilarpanpuri due to this. The ancestors are worshipped on the banks of the river but all other religious rituals are performed inside the temple. “Tilarpan” means dedicated to the ancestors and “Puri” means city.
