The Indian Women Hockey team won the inaugural FIH Nations Cup beating Spain 1-0 in the final on 17th December 2022. The match number 20 was played at Valencia, Spain and the Indian team was led by Captain Savita Punia. Gurjit Kaur scored the Winning goal. Janneke Schopman was the coach for team India. India, winning this got promoted for the 2023-24 Women’s FIH Pro League. India was in the Pool B with Japan, Chile and South Africa where as the teams in the Pool A were Spain, Ireland, Italy and South Korea. Team India played 5 matches and won all the five beating Chile, Japan, South Africa, Ireland and in the final Spain.
FIH stands for the Fédération Internationale de Hockey or International Hockey Federation (English). It is the international governing body of field Hockey and Indoor Field Hockey. FIH, founded in 1924 is headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland. It is responsible for field hockey’s major international tournaments especially the World Cup. This new, yearly event will offer a top-level competition to the best ranked teams not participating in the FIH Hockey Pro League, giving the winning team the option to be promoted to the Pro League in the next season.
The Inaugural FIH Nations Cup was played from 11th to 17th December 2022. Earlier in 2021-2022 season of the FIH Women’s Hockey Pro League, India and Spain had played as replacement teams. Australia and New Zealand pulled out due to Covid-19 related issues then.
