Indian Art and Craft – Chhapeli Dance

Chhapeli or Chapeli is a traditional folk dance form performed in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand State in India. The dance form is based on the culture of the local Uttarakhand Tribes as actual lovers usually perform this.

According to the local customs, rituals and traditions of the tribe, men and women performing the dance should be lovers who would like to enhance the bond between their relationship. Legends say that couples who perform Chhapeli dance together, strengthen their relationship while dancing with colourful costume and instruments in their hand.

Hurka, Manzira, Flute etc. are some of the instruments used while performing the Chappeli dance. Enjoy a short video of the Chhapeli Dance.
