Indian Art and Craft – Dhol Cholom

Dhol Cholom is a Drum Dance predominant in Manipur and performed during Holi festival. The central instrument of the dance is a large folk drum and therefore the name Dhol Cholom or Drum Dance.

Dhol Dance is part of the Cholom Dances – Pung Cholom (Mridanga Dance) and Dhol Cholom, which are masculine in nature. The performers wear White Dhoti, Turban and Shawl with the Dhol strapped in front of them.

The dancers play the instrument with great precision while executing movements like leaps and pirouettes in tandem with each other. They also perform acrobatic styles. Cymbals also are played in order to keep time. Cholom is a part of the Vaishnava Tradition of Sankirtana.
