Kalighat Printing originated in the 19th Century in West Bengal. It is also known as Kalighat Pat. It was mainly from the surrounding areas of the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata.
Kalighat Painting is a more modern form of painting compared to other styles. Characteristics of the Kalighat Painting was the flawless brush strokes and simple but bold images. Cheap paints and squirrel hair brushes were used for these paintings.
The Kalighat Paintings depicted Hindu gods and other Mythological characters and were in a variety of themes. In the 19th century traditional art of scroll paintings flourished in the rural areas.
Kalighat Paintings were done earlier in cloth or patas. The Calcutta School of Art had many artists from the Kalighat Temple area. It is from here the modern Kalighat Paintings started.
