Kavadi Attam is a ceremonial sacrifice and offering practiced by devotees of Hindu God Murugan. Murugan is also known in different names as Arumughan (one who has six faces), Velayudhan (one who uses Vel – Spear as his Ayudham – Weapon), Karthikeya (son of Krithikas), Subramanian etc. It is mainly performed in Palani Temple (Tamil Nadu) and also in Kerala, in India. Kavadi Attam is performed in Sri Lanka too.
Kavadi Attam is mainly performed during the Thaipooyam (Thaipusam) festival and emphasizes the debt bondage. Performers carry Kavadi (burden) on their shoulders and dance to the tune of music.
