Presenting to you a live Flute Concert by legendary Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. He is rendering the Raga Kirwani on a bamboo flute at the TheaterHotel de Oranjerie, Roermond, The Netherlands. On Tabla, it is Pandit Vijay Ghate.
Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia is an Indian Music Director and a Hindustani Classical Flautist born in Allahabad in 1938. He lost his mother at an early age and learned music and practised at his friend’s house, without his father’s knowledge. His father wanted him to become a wrestler.
Music Life
He started vocal music from his neighbour Rajaram and switched to playing flute. He was trained under Sri. Bholanath Prasanna of Varanasi for eight years. He joined the All India Radio (AIR) Cuttack in 1957 to work as a composer and performer.
Awards and Accolades
Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia is recipient of many awards and accolades. He is awarded with Padma Bhushan in 1992, Padma Vibhushan in 2000, Honorary Doctorate from North Orissa University in 2008. He has also received Honorary Doctorate from Utkal University in 2011. These are only a few to mention.
Collaborations
He collaborated with Pandit Shivkumar Sharma a music composer and Santoor Player to form a group called Shiv-Hari. They composed music for movies line Silsila and Chandni. They also have created many popular songs. Bhuban-Hari was another pair in collaboration with Sri. Bhubaneswar Mishra an Indian Music Director and Classical Violin Player. He has also collaborated with many Western Musicians like John McLaughlin, Jan Garbarek etc.
He is serving as the Artistic Director of the World Music Department at Rotterdam Music Conservatory in Netherlands. He has founded the Vrindavan Gurukul in Mumbai (2006) and Bhubaneshwar (2010). Vrindavan Gurukul imparts training in Bansuri in the Gurukul-Shiksha tradition.
