This is a concert with Nadaswaram and Thavil as the main instruments. Usually these types of concerts are known as Nadaswaram Kacheri. Featured are two prominent artists Valayapatti A.R Subramaniam on Thavil and Thiruvizha Jayashankar on Nadaswaram. The first song is famous “Vathapi Ganapathim Bhaje” in the Hamsadhwani Ragam, rendered in Adi Talam.
Thiruvizha Jayashankar
Shri Thiruvizha Jayashankar, born in 1940 is a well known classical musician and Nadaswaram Maestro from Thiruvizha in the Alleppey district of Kerala. He is the son of Thiruvizha Raghava Panicker and grand son of Thiruvizha Sanku Panicker who where Nadaswaram Maestros.
He had his preliminary lessons taught by his grand father and advanced training from his father. Jayashankar is a Diploma holder in Music from the RLV College of Music and Fine Arts under the Kerala University. He also took a B.A Degree in Music from the Government College Chittur under University of Calicut. His first public performance was at an age of 16 and has received various awards and accolades for his expertise and talent.
Valayapatti A.R Subramaniam
Shri Valayapatti A.R Subramaniam known popularly as Valayapatti is an Indian Classical Musician and Percussionist and an exponent of Thavil. He was born in Valayapatti in Pudukottai district of Tamil Nadu. He is the son of Shri Arumugham a well known Nadaswaram artist. Shri Subramaniam started his basic lessons from his father. Advanced training on Thavil was from Shri Mannargudi Rajagopala Pillai.
He has been awarded “Sangeetha Kalanidhi” by the Madras University in 2009 and also recipient of Sangeet Natak Academy Award. He has received the “Padma Shri” award in 2007, which is the fourth civilian honour by the Government of India.
