NASA’s Perseverance Rover is expected to arrive at the Red Planet on 18th February 2021. Engineers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California from where the mission is managed, confirms touch down in Jezero Crater at around 3.55pm EST on Feb 18 2021.
Perseverance
Perseverance is NASA’s most ambitious Mars Rover mission. It is focused scientifically on finding out whether there was any life ever, on Mars in the past. Perseverance is also focused on Astrobiology or study of life throughout the Universe. It will also characterize the Red Planet’s geology and climate and pave way for human exploration beyond Moon.
Ingenuity
Perseverance is also taking a small Helicopter with it, named as Ingenuity. The main job of Ingenuity is to test the first powered flight on Mars. The Helicopter is riding to Mars, attached to the belly of the Perseverance Rover
Ingenuity also carries two cameras. One, a Panchromatic, Wide Angle 0.3 Megapixel Navigation Camera to track the position of the Helicopter. Two, a 13 Megapixel colour camera which will capture the surface of Mars from near nadir just above the horizon.
